Periodica: Barriers and Enablers of Menstrual Health and Hygiene in India

Project Periodica is SPRF India’s school- and community-based intervention aimed at rethinking how menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) is communicated to young adolescents in India. While menstrual health policies and schemes have expanded over the past decade, conversations around menstruation remain limited by stigma, uneven implementation, and an over-reliance on didactic, classroom-based approaches.

At its core, Periodica is an interactive, game-based learning tool designed to create a safe, participatory, and gender-inclusive space for conversations on menstruation. Moving beyond hygiene alone, the game engages students with questions of biology, bodily diversity, myths and misconceptions, product choices, pain, disposal practices, school infrastructure, and social norms surrounding menstruation.
